The Business of Writing About Sex: June 2015

The Business of Writing About Sex
That time-date stamp is a little suspect. I’m pretty sure Virginia Woolf wasn’t saying anything in 2013. (via Google Images, btw)

Welcome to July! June was hectic, but that’s okay. I’ve got a lot going on, and more time to write, so yay! I had a moment of doubt and worry. I’m still working through it, but things are looking up.

June was a good month for blogging and a not-so-good month for sales. I know how to fix that…write more books!

Top Post of June: Orgasmic Bliss (a Masturbation Monday post!)

With the Spanking A to Z challenge, Adult Sex Ed Month, and my normal blogging, there were a LOT of posts written. It wasn’t my highest number of views in a month, and I don’t blame you. By the end of the month, I didn’t feel like writing – so I can imagine you were probably tired of reading, lol.

Masturbation Monday

June was a pretty good month as far as posts and views went. The bloggers are the ones who made a difference. Some weeks, I thought my screen was going to melt the posts were so damn hot!

Erotic Book Sales

Paid – this includes The Adventures of Sir and BabygirlSir and Babygirl: Bound by Love, and on Amazon only: Madame Gretchen, The Visitor and The Big Game

  • Amazon – 23
  • iBooks – 3
  • All Romance – 4

Free – the only free titles I have are The Visitor and The Big Game

  • Smashwords – 55
  • iBooks – 12
  • Barnes & Noble – 6
  • All Romance – 116

Not a great month for book sales. I promoted myself, but not as much or in the same way. I really attribute the lack of sales to not having published anything recently. Once I have the third Sir and Babygirl book ready, I’ll make the first one free everywhere that I can. But that’s going to take some time.

I’ll be taking The Big Game and The Visitor down from all locations in the next week or so. I’m going to edit, reformat, and distribute them in a different way that may prove more lucrative. We shall see.

I haven’t decided if I’ll keep Madame Gretchen only on Amazon indefinitely or wait until the next time I can withdraw. I don’t see a lot of sales from other distributors, but I also don’t spend a lot of time marketing them, either. Another “we shall see” kind of things.

Around the Web

I did a lot of writing in the month of June but not everything has been published yet.

I’m looking into other places to published under the Kayla Lords name. I’m finding opportunities – now I just need to do something about them.

My Two Cents

I don’t have any wisdom to share. I’m not freaking out over the Amazon changes. For those who don’t know, authors will be paid per page read for books enrolled in the KU program – instead of per book borrowed. I’m watching and I’ll give it some time before I decide what to do.

My big plan is to get my butt in gear and write more. Writers write. Sure I want to make money (need to, in fact) but that’s not why I write smut. But, if I am going to try and make enough to put gas in my car, the answer is not always more promotion (in fact, the answer for some might be less promotion). The answer is always to write more books. Now I just need to sit down and do that. If I can get my creative mojo back, I might just be unstoppable.
