Ideas Person

I think I might be an ideas person. You know, the type of person who comes up with lots of plans and ideas of things to try and do and be and see.

I can hear John Brownstone’s eyes rolling from over here. Of course I’m an ideas person. The most “famous” phrase I have (to him) is, “Ya know, I’ve been thinking…”

It’s how podcasts and blogs and websites and business ideas (oh my!) are born around here.

But I worry because ideas and plans are easy — at least to me. It’s the execution that’s difficult.

I try never to start something I don’t think I can finish. Life has taught me that much.

The problem is what to do with all these ideas.

While writing something for a client, I came up with three other ideas for them. They love the ideas, but where did they come from? And why can’t I turn that ability on when I really need it? And what happens if the ideas don’t see the light of day. What was the purpose?

When I talk to John Brownstone about one thing I want to do, two or three other ideas come to mind, and my brain starts planning.

Is this a marketable skill or just faulty wiring?

I know better than to try to do all the things I think of. Not everything is a good idea, even if it seems that way in the first 30 seconds. And not everything is doable.

But I feel like the ideas need a home, and I have no idea where to send them.

Ah well, give me a few minutes, and a separate idea will hit me, blocking out the first, and the cycle will begin again. Until then, I’ll thank gawd for John Brownstone and the little bit of self-discipline I possess that I don’t try to follow every idea down a rabbit hole. No matter how tempting and intoxicating it seems.

I’m an ideas person with no home for her ideas…and sometimes, it feels like such a waste.

  • Well, if your ideas are business-venture or sales-growth oriented, the answer is: Yes, this is a marketable skill. Provided you’re interested in working in sales or marketing.

You generally have to have the nuts & bolts bit to go with it though, if you want to make money from said skill. Though it’s possible some brand out there would want to hire an idea-generator as a niche position for their creative team. 🙂

Generally speaking, ideas are not lacking. (There’s nothing faulty with your wiring; this is a common experience.) But many people don’t know what to do to turn an idea into a reality. Or have the motivation to do so. (This is why Tony Robbins is a zillionaire.)

    • I agree, it’s not ideas that are lacking anywhere, and motivation is often in short supply. And I always wonder what it means that I like coming up with ideas but don’t always want to execute on those ideas. Hell, maybe that means I’m supposed to be a consultant, lol.

And I certainly have the motivation to make an idea a reality. Four podcasts and four websites later, I’ve been banned from following through on any new ideas for a while. Sometimes I just wish I could sit around all day and let the ideas flow, but I want them to have a home. And *not* feel like a lazy person who doesn’t want to do any work (and yes, I recognize the irony in that statement).

      • Do you keep an idea notebook? I wish I wrote down every damn idea I came up with no matter how crazy or out there. Perhaps someone could hear or read it and take it to the next level.
