Sex Writing

My New Project: The Smutlancer

Smutlancer quote - writing about sex

People keep commenting that they don’t know when I sleep, and I don’t know what they mean! *snark*

Also, let me introduce you to my latest project! It’s called TheSmutlancer.com (and now includes a podcast!).

In 2014, I became a full-time freelance writer in the vanilla world. I wrote about (and still do) real estate, insurance, marketing, ya know, fun stuff. Around 2015 I decided I wanted to write as Kayla Lords full-time. The problem, I found, was all the resources that helped me as a writer were geared towards the very vanilla world.

And in a vanilla world you can do things you can’t do on the sex and kink side of the street. You can promote things on Facebook, use Twitter ads, purchase any tool that works without caring about the Terms of Service.

So I had to pick my way through good advice and filter it through the NSFW lens and learn how to read the TOS of everything. And in all my travels I never really came across a resource that specifically helped people who want to make a living writing about sex. Even though plenty of us would love to do exactly that.

Places like Eroticon and individual blogger posts or blog series are great resources, and we need them – and more things like them. But where was the website specifically devoted to what we do?

If it’s out there, I still haven’t found it.

So I made one.

The Smutlancer Website

I played around with words and came up with “smutlancer.” It’s a combination of smut and freelancer. The purpose is to help to anyone who creates content (primarily written but not exclusively) in the world of sex and wants to make money doing it.

I don’t claim to have all the answers but this is the place where I share everything I know and believe about creating content and making money. Instead of sending you to all the websites I’ve used and asking you to filter the information for yourself, it seemed easier to share what I’ve figured out.

Sooooo, yeah, I did that.

TheSmutlancer.com is the place.

It’s been up for several months (no hurt feelings if you had no idea – I kept it kind of quiet). And now, in mid-December during a mad holiday rush while I’m trying to convince myself and the world that I’m slowing down for the holidays, I…

Added a podcast.

The Smutlancer Podcast drops every Wednesday and as of December 13, 2017, the first episode is up. You can subscribe on Apple, Google Play, Android, and Stitcher right now with more options coming soon. But you can also find it on my website.

It will be a combination of rants, rambles, actionable items, inspiration, and interviews with editors, publications, and others.

What You Get at TheSmutlancer.com

If you’re a writer or content creator (audio, video, photography) and would like to make enough money to pay for your hosting fees or your mortgage, I’ve got stuff for you. With plans to add much more in the coming months. Here’s what you’ll find:

  • Two to three blog posts a week on different smutlancing topics. I’ve written about how to write a pitch and also how to deal with imposter syndrome and lots in between.
  • Writing opportunities, mostly paid but some free or unknown. I’m slowly adding to the database. I have a list I’m working from, but I’ll take tips of any websites you know about.
  • Ask me questions. Send a question through Ask the Smutlancer! You’ll get a personal answer plus it will become a blog post or podcast topic.
  • Write for me! I’m on a limited budget but I do pay, and I want your experiences (good and bad) as you’ve started writing, pitched companies, gotten paid, or gotten fucked over.

I haven’t talked about it much because I’ve been trying to build the pieces and parts. And also, because I suffer from major imposter syndrome. While most of my readers are here for the smut, some of you write and podcast and would love to make at least a little money at it. TheSmutlancer.com is my way of sharing what I know in one centralized location.

If you consider yourself a smutlancer or think you’d like to become one, check it out!

  • You go grrl! When I’m not sitting in bed with my phone at 1 am because I’m a bloody insomniac since mum died, I’ll have a look. Funnily I used to work for my local rag writing ” human interest” stories before I went to uni (and went to uni, and went to uni) – some people never learn – lol!
    I look forward to having a look…
